The Macmillan 4x4 Challenge is probably one of the more recognised annual charity events on any 4x4 enthusiast calendar. It is a test of driving skill, navigational ability, teamwork and endurance. In the 2009 event 66 teams started off from Shropshire to complete a variety of challenges in order to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. Competitors had absolutely no prior knowledge of the route or the tasks ahead but all had to compete day and night over distances of up to 1000 miles in total. Navigation trials took place on tarmac however in the past events there have been specially organised offroad sections. To level the playing satellite navigation and GPS devices were allowed however the organisers went to extreme lengths to make sure they were of no use due to the nature of the challenges, needless to say we will leave ours at home in 2010's event.
So why this event and not sit inside a bath tub full of cold baked beans for three days?
I'm sure that everyone knows of someone who has suffered or is suffering with cancer, it wasn't long ago that my brother in law was touched by the devastating effects cancer can cause when he was diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor and it hit home how important the role of charities like Macmillan play in their lives. When I combined that to my passion for using 4x4’s for what they are built for, this event seemed the perfect choice to channel my energy.
The 2010 event will be starting on Friday morning on the 5th of march 2010 at the Britpart factory in Craven Arms, we will be completing the tasks over three challenging days whilst living and sleeping in the car and will finally finish Sunday evening in Warrington. All that the competitors will know about each challenge is they will be given a pack at each stage detailing the tasks ahead, about the only thing they can be sure about is its not a race. Very often the first to finish have missed the point, as it is more like a cryptic treasure hunt with observation and navigational tests thrown in for good measure.
